Keeping Kids Safe Through Prevention
The Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha's Gang Prevention Program targets youth who are at risk of gang involvement by providing structured programming, mentoring relationships, and positive alternatives during the critical out-of-school hours when young people are most vulnerable. Research consistently shows that after-school programs like ours are one of the most effective tools for reducing gang recruitment and youth violence in communities.
Our approach is rooted in prevention, not punishment. We work to address the underlying factors that make gang involvement appealing to young people: the need for belonging, safety, identity, and respect. By meeting these needs in a positive environment, we reduce the pull of gangs and help youth build a future based on their strengths.
The program operates in partnership with local schools, law enforcement, social service agencies, and community organizations. Staff members are trained to recognize warning signs of gang interest or involvement and to intervene early with appropriate support and referrals.
Program Components
One-on-One Mentoring
Trained staff and volunteer mentors build consistent, caring relationships with at-risk youth. Mentors provide guidance, accountability, and a trusted adult connection that can make the difference between a positive path and a destructive one.
Life Skills & Decision Making
Participants engage in structured sessions covering conflict resolution, anger management, refusal skills, communication, and goal setting. These programs help young people develop the tools they need to navigate peer pressure and difficult situations.
Positive Activities & Engagement
Sports, arts, leadership clubs, and enrichment activities give young people a sense of purpose, belonging, and accomplishment. Being part of a team or Club program fulfills the social needs that gangs exploit.
Family & Community Support
We engage families through outreach, referrals to support services, and regular communication about their child's progress. Strong family connections are one of the most powerful protective factors against gang involvement.
